A welcoming, practical website that connects Yorkshire's voluntary and community organisations with the support, opportunities and stories they need.
A clearer home for stronger communities.
Community First Yorkshire supports charities, community groups and social enterprises across North Yorkshire. Its website needs to work for people with very different starting points: a volunteer looking for an opportunity, a trustee seeking advice, or a small organisation trying to find funding. The job was to bring those needs together without making the experience feel complicated.
The challenge
There was a lot of useful information to share. The challenge was to give it a clear shape, help visitors recognise their next step and let the team publish new material confidently. The website also needed to feel like the organisation: approachable, knowledgeable and closely connected to the communities it serves.
The approach
I organised the main journeys around what visitors want to do, with clear routes into support, involvement and learning. Strong photography and a restrained colour palette give the pages a human feel, while consistent headings, summaries and calls to action help people scan longer content. Behind the scenes, reusable WordPress layouts make news, resources and campaign pages easier to maintain. The same visual language carries through everyday updates and bigger campaigns, so the site can keep growing without losing its identity.
The result
The result is a joined-up digital home for a busy organisation: a place to find practical help, discover what is happening and see the people behind the work. For the team, it provides a consistent starting point for new content rather than a fresh design decision every time. For visitors, the aim is simple: spend less time working out where to go and more time finding something useful.
